Elite athlete identity and the transitional experiences into retirement

The aim of this retrospective study is to identify some of the experiences involved in and how identity changed during retirement from elite sport in order to gain a better understanding. By enhancing knowledge on what makes a successful transition from elite sport, decision makers in sport will be more aware of what is required to support athletes in order to reduce negative experiences.

About the researcher

Kelly, formerly an International 400m athlete with Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European medals is a Senior Lecture within the School of Sports and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University. She forms part of the Physical Education team and is currently completing her Doctoral Degree in Elite Athlete Identity Transitions.
